When I was a kid, my family always had cats. We were on-the-go a lot and my parents felt like we couldn’t give a dog the attention that it deserved. I was in high school when this little pug/terrier mut kept showing up on our doorstep. It was a neighbors dog who was in and out of the hospital. He was so sweet and instantly stole all of our hearts. We would take care of the dog when he’d show up and then bring him back to the owner when he returned home. Eventually, the owners health was declining and he gave our family the dog. “Chance” was our first family dog, but he left an imprint on all our hearts and showed us just how genuinely loving, sweet and fun dogs can be.
Luckily, I met and married a man who loves dogs just as much as I do. A mere three months before I got pregnant with our daughter, we picked up a yellow lab puppy that we named Riley. Riley was rambunctious, didn’t listen well and was really only sweet when she was sleeping. But we loved her anyways! Through lots of training, love and a lot of growing up Riley is now the sweetest dog who listens and is extremely tolerant of our now three-year-old daughter.
Riley was our first “baby”. She taught both my husband and myself a lot about responsibility before the real baby came. She’s been my constant companion when my husband’s military service has him leave town and she was the one who licked my tears away when I struggled at first to adjust to living in Alaska. Now our Riley is the best hiking buddy, the one who we rely on to scare the bears away (it’s a literal problem here) and Madison’s best friend! It fills my heart to see how much these two love each other and just how they play together.
