This is the perfect recipe for your next cookout! My family currently lives in a small military community. My husband is Active Duty Coast Guard and we’re stationed on an island in Alaska – thousands of miles away from our families on the east coast. Since moving here, we have several friends who have become like family that we love hosting for cookouts. I was so excited to cook my favorite Sweet and Spicy Barbecue Ribs recipe this past weekend for our friends!

Did I mention these were absolutely devoured? My husband is already asking when I’m going to cook these again! The secret to cooking these is adding the dry rub AND the homemade barbecue sauce.

I know making your own barbecue sauce can sound intimidating, but it’s actually extremely easy. Store bought barbecue sauce can include a ton of unnecessary sugar. While this recipe does contain brown sugar, it’s only what’s needed. I love cooking up a batch of this barbecue sauce recipe to save for other meals as well.

But now we need to get on to our recipe for Sweet and Spicy Barbecue Ribs!

Sweet and Spicy Barbecue Ribs with Homemade Dry Rub and Homemade Barbecue Sauce

First you need to pat dry your ribs with a VIVA®Paper Towel. Set aside your ribs while you mix up your dry rub. Place brown sugar, paprika, ground mustard, chili powder, cayenne pepper, black pepper, garlic powder and onion salt in a bowl and mix until well combined.

Once well combined, completely cover your ribs with the dry rub. Be generous and cover ribs both front and back.

Set ribs aside to marinate. I normally allow mine to marinate for 2-3 hours, but this is optional. Your ribs will still be delicious if you skip marinating.

Once your ribs are done marinating, you can preheat your oven to 250 degrees. Cook ribs in a roaster for two hours. If you don’t have a roaster, wrap your ribs in tin foil.

While your ribs cook, you can prepare your barbecue sauce. I’m from North Carolina and we LOVE our barbecue sauce there. Store bought barbecue sauce just doesn’t compare to the sweet and smoky goodness of my homemade recipe. The best part (besides it being delicious) is that it’s not made with any crazy ingredients. These are all items you probably already have sitting in your refrigerator and spice cabinet.

All you do is add ketchup (I use organic sugar free but any kind will do), honey, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, water, ground pepper, onion salt, garlic powder, lemon juice, and Worcestershire sauce to a medium sauce pan. Whisk all your ingredients together quickly while bringing to a boil. Be sure to whisk until well combined and often to be sure not to burn any ingredients. Once well combined and boiling, bring the heat down to a simmer and allow to sit uncovered for about 45 minutes or until your sauce has reached the desired consistency.

Once your ribs and barbecue sauce are both cooked, it’s time to grill!

Preheat your grill to around 400 degrees. While your grills heats up you can cut and divide your ribs. Cover your ribs with a thick layer of barbecue sauce before placing on the grill. Cook your ribs for two minutes on each side before covering your ribs with another generous layer of barbecue sauce. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes before removing.

Make sure to have your VIVA® Paper Towels and Kleenex Wet Wipes handy!
